So, You want to be a DJ: I get more emails asking for advice from up and coming DJs than anything else. I've added a few pointers from my experience below:
- Practice, Practice, Practice

- Don't ever buy cheap equipment; you can only be as good as your "tools" allow you to be!
- Be professional, but don't take it so seriously. If you don't have fun, nobody else will either.
- Don't lock yourself into any particular style of music, the broader your play list the more job opportunities you will have, (I have spun 80's, Rock and even Lounge and Swing nights during my career).
- Nightclubs can be a dirty business with a lot of temptations, avoid them at all costs! This is the biggest reason most DJ's fail. I'm not going to go to far into it, but a reputation for drugs will kill your career quicker than anything else.
- Even though it's fun, this is a job. You need to make money. Therefore, you must determine a value for your services and stick to it (advice from my dad that has served me well). That means you will have to turn down work that doesn't meet your financial requirements. It's a tough biz, be ready for many years of lean times before the cash rolls in.
If you have any questions or comments about the show, want to know the name of a song I played, want to make a request, or need booking information please feel free to email me djkidd@955thebeat.com or stop by the DJ booth and say hi.
